The Monumental Garden of Valsanzibio was built between 1665 and 1696 by one of the richest and most important Venetian families, the Barbarigo family, as a solemn vow to God to defeat the Plague of 1630.

It is a place conceived as an allegorical walk to convey a positive message to the visitor, of a life where difficulties are faced and where there is always a solution; a life where it is good to stop and meditate from time to time, a life where time is precious and must be lived intensely, with joy, in anticipation of eternity. A path that has remained intact over the centuries where the beauty of nature blends in perfect harmony with that forged by the hand of man.

The stages towards the current splendor begin in the second half of the 1600s at the behest of the Venetian nobleman Zuane Francesco Barbarigo, helped by his sons Antonio and Gregorio. It was precisely the latter, Gregory (Cardinal, Bishop of Padua and future Saint), who inspired the high symbolism of the project due to the main Pontifical architect and fountain-maker Luigi Bernini.

This exceptional example of Baroque garden consists of over 60 statues carved in Istrian stone, mostly the work of Merengo, and as many minor sculptures that integrate with the architecture, streams, waterfalls, fountains, lakes, water tricks and fishponds. On more than 10 hectares of surface there are trees and shrubs from 300 to 900 years of age, with centuries-old specimens from four continents (Asia, America, Africa and Europe). Inside the complex, an important stage in the Path of Salvation, there is the Labyrinth of Bosso, the symbolic Hermit's Cave, the Isola dei Conigli and the Monument to Time.

Today it is presented as one of the largest and most complete historic gardens in the world, which was awarded the first prize as "The most beautiful garden in Italy" in 2003 and the third most beautiful in Europe in 2007. The credit for this goes to the assiduous care of the Barbarigo nobles throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, to those of the Nobil Homo Michiel in the 19th century, to the Martinengo da Barco Counts and to the Donà delle Rose Counts at the turn of the 20th century and, from 1929, to the Pizzoni nobles of the Ardemani Counts . Owners of the entire estate for three generations, the Pizzoni Ardemani family has repaired the disasters caused by the military occupation and the forced abandonment of the last war. They have recently restored all 33 water points in the Garden compromised by 80 years of progressive spring impoverishment.

The garden can be visited all year round. Adult admission €12.
