On December 1, 1943, the B-17F 41-24557 JD-O “Damn Yankee” crashed here, returning from a bombing flight on Solingen in the Ruhr area. The bomber had been forced to leave formation and was only flying at low altitude when it was attacked by two Fw 190s. Five crew members of the “Damn Yankee” were killed, five others bailed out with their parachute. The Germans captured four crew members, pilot Bruce Sundlin was able to escape thanks to the help of the local population. Passing through France and Spain, he arrived again in England on December 28, 1943.

The 'Damn Yankee' was a B17 bomber that crashed in Jabbeke in 1943. The plane was returning from a mission to Solingen (Germany) when it went completely wrong after a fierce dogfight. The survivors of the crash were imprisoned in German POW camps. There is a memorial plaque at the place where the bomber crashed
