For centuries, the Doelenstraat has formed the connection between the count's territory and the northern part of the city. In earlier centuries, the militia practiced the so-called 'parrot shooting' here, in which a large wooden bird, the "parrot", is shot from a high pole. The name of the narrow side street 'de Schans' is also a reminder of this. In 1876, a large fire destroyed 26 houses in the street. As a result, the construction of houses with a wooden facade in Almelo was prohibited from then on. Most of the buildings date from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The building at Doelenstraat 15 used to be a stable. It was demolished in 1998 due to serious dilapidation. The current building was then built in a historicist style and was given a facade stone with the text: 'de Oude stalhouder' as a reminder of its former function.
