Already the Romans created a city called Civitas Albiensium. In 843, Charles the Bald took control of the city.After Albi, the religious community of the Cathars, which was subjected to severe persecution by the Church in the Middle Ages, is also called the Albigensians. In the Albigensian Wars between 1209 and 1229 Albi was almost completely destroyed.In 1678 the city became the seat of an archbishop and since 1790 it has been the prefecture of the Tarn department.
