"In the stream valleys of the Holzwarche nature reserve, between the towns of Rocherath and Mürringen, lies one of the last most important refuges of the yellow wild daffodil, where it offers a special natural spectacle with over ten million flowers every year between April and May. The flowers can also be found on the edge of the High Fens and the Kelmis region.

The wild daffodil was originally distributed in western Central Europe. Its main distribution area is in Atlantic landscapes with high rainfall. Its natural habitat is poor limestone, poor wet meadows."

The yellow wild daffodil usually blooms between early April and early May. For decades, the meadows on the wet meadows were used for hay production. For annual fertilization of the meadows, farmers dug so-called ditches parallel to the slopes and irrigated the areas with stream water containing suspended matter. This is how flower-rich wet and marshy meadows thrived, with angelica and yellow daffodils. With the use of artificial fertilizers after the Second World War, cultivating the meadows was no longer profitable. The stream valleys were reforested with spruce trees or intensively used as grassland. The dark spruce forests left no habitat for the yellow wild daffodil. In 1978, a nature reserve was established to protect the stream valleys in the Holzwarche area. In the 1980s, nature conservation efforts were made to restore the daffodil's habitat. Spruce trees were removed from the valleys, allowing species diversity to increase again.

The daffodil blooming season typically falls between the end of March and mid-April, depending on the weather. During this time, special daffodil hikes are offered throughout the region around the upper Holzwarche, particularly starting from Rocherath-Krinkelt (Belgium) and Hollerath (Germany). The most beautiful trails lead through the Holzwarche valley and its side valleys, where the yellow blossoms contrast beautifully with the fresh green of the meadows and the dark backdrop of the forests.
