The school building was built in 1575 and later expanded. It is the second oldest school building in Thuringia. A half-timbered upper floor rises above the sandstone ground floor with two round-arch portals and several inscription panels. The "Schulmännle", a late medieval stone sculpture on the east corner of the "Old School", is interpreted in folk legend as a treasure finder and donor of the historic building.
