Castelnuovo dell'Abate (389 m a.s.l.) is a fraction of the municipality of Montalcino. This village, immersed in a beautiful countryside with hills covered with olive trees, vines and cypresses, preserves its medieval aspect intact. It was born as a possession of the abbey of Sant'Antimo, on one of the three hills surrounding the valley of the Starcia stream. Inside the fortified village, the abbot had a residence built, which in 1462, with the suppression of the abbey, became the occasional residence of the bishop of Montalcino.

The place is named after the abbots of Sant'Antimo, who built a castle on the hill south of the abbey, which was built on the ruins of a much older one. The local church was first mentioned on February 11, 1333. The city walls were built around 1360 by the Republic of Siena. After the Abbey of Sant'Antimo was dissolved by Pope Pius II in 1462, the place came under the Bishop of Montalcino. On June 2, 1777 the place became a hamlet of Montalcino
