The Abbey of Sant'Antimo, built by Charlemagne, is a silent portal to bygone eras. It stands majestically among the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, offering a peaceful refuge to travellers. It is a masterpiece of medieval architecture from the 12th century, and it is also possible to stay overnight in the monastic guesthouse of Castelnuovo dell'Abate.

A place of strength that has been sleeping for more than 500 years and was repopulated by French Augustinian canons a good 40 years ago

It is very suggestive to enter the Abbey and listen to the sacred choirs. The Abbey appears to have been commissioned by Charlemagne and was a Benedictine monastery.
