The Pazin Kastel is one of the largest and best preserved medieval castles in Istria. It has been mentioned in written documents since 983. The vertically sloping castle rock is spectacular.

The castle was first mentioned in the 10th century as Castrum Pisinum in a document issued by Emperor Otto II on June 7, 983, in which the possession of the castle was confirmed to the Bishop of Poreč. In the 12th century, the bishops of Poreč ceded the property to Meinhard von Schwarzenburg (Croatian Črni grad), then to Meinhard I, Count of Görz, and Meinhard, Margrave of Istria, and his successors.

Albert IV, Margrave of Gorizia, died in 1374 without heirs, and the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs. In the following centuries the Habsburgs rented them out or gave them as fiefs to various noble families allied with them (Auersperg, Barbo, Della Torre, Devinski, Dürr, Eggenberg, Flangini, Fugger, Khevenhüller, Mosconi, Turinetti, Walsee and others).

In 1766 the castle was sold to Antonio Laderchi de Montecuccoli and remained in the possession of his family until 1945.

For many centuries, the Pazin Castle was the administrative seat of the County of Pazin (Croatian Pazinska grofovija / Pazinska knežija, Italian Contado di Pisino, German County Mitterburg) or the County of Austria (County of Istria), administered either by a castellan or by the count himself.

Imposing castle with view in gorge. In the castle is an etymological museum. Opposite you can glide on a rope over the gorge (not open in April).
