With the closure of the last German hard coal briquette factory on March 31, 2008 (almost exactly 11 years after underground operations ceased), the era of hard coal mining in the Ratheim and Hückelhoven area came to an end. The closure was justified by declining demand in the domestic fuel market. The briquette factory building was demolished in February 2009.
