The Mercat Cross, or 'Market Cross' to the non-Scots, can often be found in Scottish towns, villages, and cities. Historically, the cross was erected in squares or other open areas to mark the right to hold a public market or fair here, usually granted by the monarch, a bishop, or a baron.

Built in 1686, the Mercat Cross was the place were monarchs were proclaimed to the local burgh. Easily spotted in the centre of the castlegate.
