Close to Milan and where the Ticino and Po meet, lies Pavia, the ancient capital of the Lombard kings. It is a pleasant university town, where beautiful churches rise above narrow streets with tall red-brick houses: a maze that you can only explore on foot. Pavia could easily have been overshadowed by nearby Milan. Thanks to the university founded in 1361, one of the most renowned in Europe, it lives in a student rhythm, which gives the city a youthful, dynamic allure. The great treasure of Pavia, a 14th-century Carthusian monastery, lies outside the city on the road to Milan.
