The upper bridge was initially a wooden bridge over the swampy area of the Töpferbach. In 1537 a stone bridge with three narrow arches was built. During the devastating flood of 1897, this construction acted as a barrier for flotsam, which allowed the accumulated water to flood large parts of the city. In 1913 the bridge was demolished. After five months of construction, the new two-arch bridge with a central pillar was ready. This bridge appealed with its decorative natural stone facings. At that time it received six candelabra as bridge lighting. A few years ago, the ever-increasing traffic required a thorough renovation. In 1995, renewal of the seawalls below the bridge on the pharmacy side at the upper bridge began. In 1996 the bridge was removed down to the unreinforced natural stone arches. A new concrete shell was built over it again. All building elements that are under monument protection got their place in the building again. At the same time, a roundabout was built in the area of the Wappenhenschstift. In September 1997, traffic was able to roll over the newly created upper bridge again.
