The Great Moor in Sassenburg is part of the north-west German raised bog district, which extends from the Netherlands to the eastern border of Lower Saxony on the geest areas shaped by the Ice Age. The moor originally covered an area of approx. 5,800 ha with almost 5,000 hectares of raised moor and a smaller proportion of fen. The peat layer reaches a thickness of almost 6 meters in places. Individual sub-areas have their own names, such as Stüder-Moor, Hestenmoor or Weißes Moor.

Most of the moor is in the municipality of Sassenburg (Gifhorn district). In the east it is bordered by the Elbe side canal. In the south lies the district of Triangel, in the west the moor stretches as far as Wesendorf. In the north is the municipality of Schönewörde. Originally founded as a moor colony, today's Sassenburg district of Neudorf-Platendorf, whose village street is around six kilometers long and the longest through town in Lower Saxony, extends from the south into the moor.

The Great Moor fills the valley of the Ise over a length of 15 km and a width between 2 and 6 km. About 49 km² of the original 58 km² of the moor are still preserved today. Due to peat cutting and cultivation, they are in varying degrees of degeneration.

Landscape worth seeing, especially in autumn. The path is a relief for feet and knees
