The abbey church was built in 1746-48 and consecrated in 1749. It is not the first church on this site. The church and congregation belonged to the Grünhain monastery and for many years was a branch congregation of origin.
With the unification of the towns of Oberlungwitz and Abtei in 1890, the parishes of Abtei and St. Martin Oberlungwitz were also united.
The abbey church is built in the style of an old peasant church. It has two galleries.
There is a bell in the roof turret. Two old bells from the abbey church are in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg.
Extensive renovation and restoration work was carried out between 1991 and 2001, making the church a real gem.
There is a cemetery at the church.
