The war memorial was unveiled in 1890 and is intended to commemorate the soldiers of the Franco-Prussian War of 1871/72. In 1970, every Wackernheim soldier received a woollen shirt, a waistband and a pair of socks from the municipality of Wackernheim.
The Germanica represents the German Empire. Originally, it held the imperial crown in its right hand. The relief portrait shows Emperor Wilhelm I, the coat of arms belongs to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The monument was created by the Ingelheim sculptor Jakob Dietz.
The war memorial is a foundation of the "Wackernheim Veterans' Association", which had its headquarters in part of the former Protestant school garden. In 1900, the building became the property of the "Wackernheim Gymnastics Association", which built the gymnasium here.
