For the first time since the 16th century, the remains can be seen again. They can be admired in the same spot where they lay buried for centuries. The remains of the wooden drawbridge have been placed in front of the stone gate.

The remains of the former castle were discovered during construction work.

Vredenburg Castle was a fortress, with which the lord Charles tried to keep the people of Utrecht in line. The castle was besieged and demolished. According to legend, a Utrecht woman, Trijn van Leemput, was the first to attack the castle with a pickaxe.
