Folkert Kuipers, born in Akkrum and who became rich in the US under the name Cooper, donated this residential block to Akkrum in 1901.

In 1866, F.H. Kuipers, a native of Akkrum, emigrated to the United States, where he became a wealthy businessman. During his annual visits to his father, he noticed the poverty of the village's elderly population. Therefore, he established a foundation with the goal of providing shelter and food to the village's poor. Coopersburg was built. (Kuiper had changed his name to Cooper in the United States.) It features a magnificent garden, a carp pond, a mausoleum, and a Regent's Room. This room can be visited upon request.

The monumental building was taken into use in 1901 and was donated to the village by Folkert Kuipers. The young Akkrumer emigrated to America, opened the then largest department store in the world in 1896 and became a multimillionaire. He saw the poverty in his native village and built Coopersburg. The twenty impoverished couples could live there for free and also received a contribution of three guilders per week. That was about the same amount that a constable earned at the time.
