In 1989, areas of the city of Bühl and the communities of Bühlertal and Ottersweier were declared a nature and landscape conservation area "Waldhägenich" by decree of the regional council of Karlsruhe. The total area is 546.5 ha, with the NSG covering 240 ha.
The area is part of the large wet forest area of the Kinzig-Murg channel, which was drained with a dense network of canals and ditches in the last century. Remains of the typical landscape before the drainage have been preserved in the protected area; however, the area is highly endangered.
