The church dates back to a Benedictine monastery built in 1016. The monastery church was completed in 1031 and was known as Abdinghof (= Abbot's Courtyard) from the 13th century onwards. After a temporary secularization from 1803 to 1866, the Abdinghof Church is still used for Protestant services today. The renovation work at the end of secularization is characteristic of the church's current appearance. At that time, the limestone masonry was exposed and the windows enlarged.
