Until the Middle Ages, the loop was the most important trade link between the North and Baltic Seas. The Viking settlement of Haithabu was built in the protected rearmost end. It is seldom possible to cycle close to the shore. Often enough, however, you can enjoy a wide view of the elongated, flat water, which is more like a large inland lake than a river.
The most cyclable sections near the Schleine are between Kappeln and Arnis on the west side, between Arnis and Sieseby on the east side, and also between Schleswig and Louisenlund on the south side of the Schlei.
There are smearings in Missunde (ferry), Lindaunis (bascule bridge), Arnis (quaint little ferry) and Kappeln (new Schlei bascule bridge).

Arnis was founded in 1667 by 65 families from the nearby town of Kappeln on the then uninhabited island in the Schlei.
Today it is an idyllic old fishing village with lots of charm and a fantastic location right on the Schlei.
