The idyllically located Mülheim water station on the lock island is not only the main landing stage of the "White Fleet" but has been a classic excursion destination for generations.

Holiday flair surrounds the visitors who stroll along the water on the promenade or past the colorful flower clock erected in 1953 and the fountain. The restaurant with beer garden in the Wasserbahnhof building, which was modeled on the bow of a ship in the 1920s, is also very popular.

Numerous cycling and walking paths also lead across the island, which is surrounded by the Ruhr and the port canal. From here the passenger ships of the White Fleet set off on their journeys through the picturesque Ruhr Valley to Essen-Kettwig.

The historic Ruhr sluice, through which one enters the island, points far back into the industrialization history of the city:

Coal mining had been going on in Mülheim an der Ruhr since 1460. However, the transport of the mined material upstream only became possible with the completion of this lock in 1780. Despite manual operation, a ship was locked every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times. In 1927 - after the construction of the Kahlenberg weir - the level of the Ruhr had increased by 1.50 metres. The lock had to be adjusted. From 1993 to 1994 it was completely renovated. It is still in operation today and is increasingly serving the steadily growing water Ruhr tourism, when house, leisure and sports boats drive here, for example in the direction of Mülheim city harbor or further to the Rhine.

And on through the Ruhraue to Kettwig

Only a few meters from the city center of Mülheim there is a wonderful recreational area with two islands in the Ruhr - the lock island and the Dohne island.

Since its construction in 1927, it serves (hence the name) as a starting point for the excursion boats of the White Fleet, which drive from here the Ruhr up to the Kettwiger reservoir. In good weather definitely recommended and quite affordable. Furthermore, there is a restaurant and a club in the water station, in summer also with outdoor catering.

Between the water station and the building behind, the house Ruhrnatur an old steam engine pump from the year 1896 is established. A phenomenal part that reveals new motifs for those who love detail from every angle. In the already mentioned house Ruhrnatur (a former boathouse from the 20s), children and adults can learn something about water, currents and the living beings in it by many experiments. And the huge aquarium with fish based in the Ruhr is also worthwhile.

And on we go, from Lock Island to the Ruhr Island. The transition marks a hydroelectric power plant from the 20s with the adjacent pumping station. At the end of the Ruhr island we have the choice. It goes left over a pretty pedestrian bridge on the towpath and then back to the starting point, or a little further right over the Kahlenberger weir, the imposing structure, which controls the amount of water of the underlying parts by means of two huge steel rollers.
