According to legend, Abbot Maximilian Pagl of Lambach Abbey vowed to have a church built if the plague passed Lambach by. Since the plague spared Lambach and was considered extinct in nearby Wels on Christmas Day 1713, the abbot, in order to keep his promise, petitioned the episcopal ordinariate in Passau in a letter dated January 2, 1714, for permission to build the chapel.
