Nice dry slow road through the wet pants, between the Dijle and the Demer...

The Wijgmaalbroek owes its natural value to the Dijle. But historical land use by humans also created a great diversity of plants and animals. The residents of the village grazed their livestock on the communal grazing lands of the natural flood area. They also left some bushes for firewood and supplies. This centuries-old, small-scale land management created a varied bocage landscape with hay fields, meadows and a dense network of wooded areas. The main assets are the attractive valley landscape, through which the river naturally meanders, and the attractive open space, in an otherwise densely built-up area, in the vicinity of Leuven. The Wijgmaalbroek also forms an important link in the ecologically valuable Dyle Valley, one of the most important natural centers in Flemish Brabant.
