The 900-year-old church tower with stone walls up to one and a half meters thick is the oldest part of the building that has been preserved. The spire, however, was rebuilt after a fire in the 19th century. There were several previous buildings in the course of history, including a first wooden church (built around 850). It was dedicated to Saint Willehad, the first bishop in Bremen. The first stone church with the church tower that still exists today was built in the 13th century.
