    The fortified position of Liège was part of an extensive network of forts to protect Belgium against an enemy invasion. It describes an arc that stretches from Comblain-au-Pont to Visé. The defensive line around Liège was sixty kilometres long and contained strong ‘modern’ bunkers (Tancremont, Battice and Aubin-Neufchâteau) and smaller bunkers. The line formed a shield around the city of Liège and was constructed in the period 1934 - 1935.
    The fortified position of Liège was divided into defensive lines:
    - The forward positions, with 65 shelters;
    - Defence sector Liège 1, contained 178 bunkers and the 3 strong bunkers;
    - Defence sector Liège 2, consisting of 62 bunkers and 6 modernised old forts;
    - Defence sector Liège 3, with 41 bunkers;
    - Defence sector Liege 4, with 37 bunkers and 2 modernised old forts.
    The defence bunker MN9 is located on the grounds of the Defence sector Liege 1, Margarine - Neufchateau (MN). This area contained 31 bunkers, of which only 3 were used: the bunkers MN18, MN11 (Macra) and MN29 (Bois del Fiesse / Croix de Charneux). Serious tragedies took place in the last two bunkers.
