The Ancient Monastery of Scardavilla is immersed in a truly significant landscape and environmental context, so much so that in 1991 an oriented nature reserve of about 28 hectares was established, access to the central heart of which requires a specific authorization which is issued to the inside the "Mirco Bravaccini" Civic Museum and Visitor Center located in the historic center of Meldola.
    ...
When we talk about Scardavilla we usually make the distinction between Scardavilla di sotto and Scardavilla di sopra. The two buildings, which appear to be aligned with each other along an ideal east-west perspective axis, are a few hundred meters apart. The Monastery, which is certainly the oldest building and rich in history, corresponds to the so-called Scardavilla di sotto, whose construction dates back to before 1225, when we have the first historical news of a place already inhabited by monks who referred to the convent of S. Maria in Vincareto of Bertinoro.
    ...
We owe the Camaldolese monks the construction, between 1684 and 1733, of today's Scardavilla di Sopra, which consisted of a Baroque church surrounded by twelve cells for hermits which had the same spiral shape as those of the more famous Hermitage of Camaldoli. Today, Scardavilla di Sotto is certainly much better preserved between the two buildings, also thanks to the careful management of the Picchi family who acquired the property in the 1960s.
