The Church of Misericordia is located in the center of the old town above the central Republic Square. The main façade is considered one of the finest examples of Portuguese Renaissance in the Algarve. The walls of the church are decorated with blue and white azulejo paintings. It houses a small museum. From the tower there are good views over the city, the river and the wetlands with salt pans towards the coast. Next door is a small concert room for fado performances.
