This beautiful house with it's manicured grounds was once owned by Gilbert White, one of Britains most-loved naturalist and ornithologists. It now houses a museum for his work alongside that of Captain Lawrence Oates and Frank Oates, explorers and naturalists in their own right.

In the museum, you can explore the works of Gilbert Whites, but there is much more to be gained by walking around the garden where techniques and plants come together to show the work he did to nurture the relationship between human and nature.

You can also explore the lives of Captain Lawrence and his brother Frank. Lawrence was best known for his intrepid voyage with the famous explore Scott to the South Pole. The expedition, called Terra Nova sadly resulted in the loss of the lives of five explorers including Scott and Oates.

Captain Lawrence Oates' last words, rather poignantly were “I am just going outside and may be some time”.
