Relatively unknown, it is the family home of Jane Austen’s relatives. Very well laid out and full of historic items, including first editions of Jane’s books. One of the guides is her 6th nephew!

This regal and imposing Elizabethan Manor House, set at the end of a long driveway and overlooking the local church is best known for its connections to the Austen family.

It was bequeathed to Edward Austen, the brother one of the UK's best known and loved female authors, Jane Austen in the 1800s. It was thought that she visited here frequently as she lived less than a mile away.

It continued being privately held in the family until being sold in 1992 for an eye-watering £1.25 million on behalf of a foundation owned by tech moguls Sandra Lerner and Leonard Bosack.

Nowadays it rather fittingly houses a centre for research in early female authors. They are open to any and all visitors and house a wide range of literature from female authors, famous and otherwise.

Cost to enter is £10 per person for a year pass to the house and garden (price in 2021). Very interesting and varied artefacts and knowledgeable staff.
