Castello Maniace – the present fortress was built by Frederick II from 1232 to 1240.
In 1704, a gunpowder chamber exploded, destroying large parts of the interior of Castello Maniace. The exterior, however, remains virtually unchanged. It has been open to visitors since 2004 following renovations.
Worth seeing: the portal from the Hohenstaufen period, the Gothic columned hall of Castello Maniace with its cross-ribbed vault, and the Hohenstaufen stele next to the entrance.
