St. Antönien im Prättigau GR / Walser culture
St. Antönien, in the local Walser dialect Santa(n)töniä.
In the 9th century, the Alemanni reached Goms in Valais on their migration from the Bernese Oberland and gradually settled the upper Rhone valley. In the 13th and 14th centuries, individual groups of these Alemanni left the Rhone Valley and its side valleys and moved to other higher valleys in the Alps, such as the Safiental in Graubünden, with the highest Safier settlement of Ober Cemana at 1791 m above sea level. Mountaineering village of St. Antönien
The post bus drives leisurely along the winding road along the Schanielatobel from Küblis via Pany. Finally the valley opens up and you reach St. Antönien, embedded in gentle slopes and surrounded by a wreath of peaks. St. Antönien is the highest village in the municipality of Luzein and became the first Swiss mountaineering village in 2021.
The hands of the church clock seem to turn more slowly. It is the serenity that sets in at the sight of the fascinating mountain world and its inherent tranquility and redefines the sense of time. This mountain landscape has also shaped life in St. Antönien. Since the settlement by the Walser, agriculture has been practiced here despite the natural hazards. The cultural landscape that has been cultivated by our farmers for decades, the characteristic scattered settlement and spectacular natural values such as the Schijenzan (free-standing rock needle), the Plasseggen-Schijenflue protected area or the extensive cave systems of the Sulzfluh and Schijenflue are landmarks of St. Antönien. Together with life in the valley, which is shaped by the Walser culture, the world of experience is created that makes St. Antönien unique.
St. Antönien offers a stage for mountaineers, those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers in all seasons. Whether on skis, bikes, on foot or on a rope, those who like to be active in nature will get their money's worth. Mountain sports have a long tradition among locals and guests, and the closeness to nature and down-to-earth nature of St. Antönien have always shaped nature-based tourism.
