The company, founded in 1625, owned an extensive peat area in the vicinity of Hoogeveen. A part (100 morgen) was set aside by the founder of the company Rudolf van Echten and/or his successors and designated as a so-called 'church plot'. The proceeds from this lot were given a religious destination. The name Ad Pios Usus (= to a religious/pious use) is a reference to that religious destination. The proceeds of the fund supported the churches in Hoogeveen, Elim and Hollandscheveld. In 1934 the fund became part of the 'Jonkheer Rudolf van Echtenfonds'.
