This district was developed by the manufacturers Woellner and Mannes, who built a factory for chemical products in the middle of the heath after 1820.

The Kunstfeld settlement is the oldest workers' settlement in the Rhineland, dating from 1820 and including a classicist manufacturer's villa in the Bergisch style (half-timbered, slate).

The Kunstfeldsiedlung is the oldest workers' settlement in Germany and, along with the 7 old toilet houses, is a listed building.

The Kunstfeld has its name for a reason. "Artificial" products were manufactured here for over 50 years, from around 1820 to the early 1870s. In short: this was where Dünnwald's industrial heart beat. Hard to imagine in view of today's idyll, which is only marred by the noise of the freight line.

The first production facilities were actually built in the secularized farm buildings of the monastery around 1813. But the priest and the community complained about the bad smell, so the manufacturer Johann Gottfried Wöllner bought a piece of land in the Schlebuscher Heide (today's Kunstfeld) and moved his production of textile dye there. The demand for the so-called Berlin blue was enormous, as it was used to dye the uniforms of the Prussian army, among other things.

        History:

Although Napoleon never reached Dünnwald (in 1811 the French Emperor stayed overnight in Mülheim) – the effects of his policies did not stop at the village. The founding and further development of Dünnwald was closely linked to the church and monastery for many centuries. The dissolution of the monastery in 1803 as a result of the Imperial Deputation Act marked a turning point that encouraged and accompanied the industrial revolution. Monasteries were dissolved everywhere and their commercial buildings sold and leased. In many cases, craft businesses moved into the buildings, which sometimes developed into factories and later into small factories.
