The Church of St. Cornelius is in the middle of the old town of St-Tönis.

I find the surrounding townhouses very small compared to the mighty church building.
      But a nice quiet place.

St. Tönis originally belonged to the parish of St. Mary's Birth Kempen and initially had no church. This changed in 1380, when the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III of Saarwerden, approved the construction of a chapel and the creation of a cemetery in St. Tönis in a document dated September 10th. The chapel, built in the 1390s, received a bell tower in 1483. In 1554, the church's affiliation with Kempen ended, St. Tönis became an independent parish and the chapel also became a parish church.

Due to the effects of war, the bell tower collapsed in 1585 and the rest of the church was also badly damaged. A new church tower was not built until 1619, but it was set on fire again in 1642 during the Thirty Years' War, as was the entire church building. While the nave was subsequently restored, the tower was fitted with a temporary roof. It was not until 1851 that the tower received a proper spire again.
