In 1929, the city of Krefeld acquired the 120-hectare forest. The heath planted with pine trees was converted into a mixed deciduous forest with a few larches and pines from 1930 onwards.

The paths run in a star shape towards the forester's lodge, which forms the center of the "Forstwald" forest area. A restaurant is housed here today.

The area originally belonged to the area of the former municipality of Vorst, which in turn has been a district of today's neighboring town of Tönisvorst since 1970, and which sold it to the Krefeld businessman Gerhard Schumacher at the time. Schumacher had this part of the St. Töniser Heide reforested with pines, today's Krefeld forest forest. However, this first reforestation was destroyed by a forest fire. The second reforestation with the path network that still exists today was permanent. In 1929 this area with 220 hectares was incorporated into Krefeld. The Forstwald district is considered one of the best residential areas in Krefeld.
