The pillboxes at Balmedie Beach are remnants from World War II. Here are some interesting facts about them:During the war, around 18,000 pillboxes were constructed in the UK.
There are four remaining pillboxes on Balmedie Beach.
These pillboxes are concrete dug-in guard posts, normally equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons.
Anti-tank blocks were also placed along the beach, in anticipation of enemy attacks from the sea.
The wind has eroded the sand to reveal the deep foundations on which these pill boxes were built.
These historical structures provide a glimpse into the past and are part of the unique charm of Balmedie Beach.
