At Crocetta Zebio the Austro-Hungarian army had fortified a natural tower and had made it an impregnable stronghold complex ('Quota 1706'), repeatedly but in vain attacked by the Italian troops: trenches, shelters and cave deposits, observatory, machine gun emplacements, terminus of cable car.
Monte Zebio was of enormous defensive importance: behind these lines passed, in fact, the only easily practicable road which from Vezzena and the Val d'Assa carried supplies to the front line of the imperial army on the plateau.
