As beautiful as the Peace Park may be, it has an ugly history. Because until 1973 the New St. John's Cemetery was located here: burial place of the wealthy Leipzig bourgeoisie. In the workers' and farmers' state of the GDR, this was considered decadent, so the cemetery had to go. The partly ornate tombs were leveled, the stones pushed together to form a mound and covered with earth. Years later, the area was redesigned in order to hand it over as a peace park in 1983. Only the historic north gate has survived.

The 20-hectare green space in the southeastern part of Leipzig was opened as the Peace Park in 1983. Previously, the area was used as the new St. John's Cemetery.
The green space on Linnéstraße in the south of the city was opened in 1846 as the new St. John's Cemetery, as the Old St. John's Cemetery had reached its capacity and could not be expanded. Due to severe damage from World War II, it was closed to burials at the end of 1950 and completely closed to the public 20 years later. The former function of today's park can still be glimpsed through the remains of the surrounding wall and a few preserved sections.
The Peace Park also has a lot to offer families. In addition to the popular playground, there are table tennis tables, sports equipment, a basketball court, a barbecue area, and a toboggan hill, which is very popular in winter.
