This cycle path does not run along the Ilmenau but at the Lösegraben. This serves to control the water level of Ilmenau in the city. It has its present form since the end of the 19th century, before it was more a small stream.

As Siegfried LG has already written, this path does not run along the Ilmenau, but along the Lösegraben. The Lösegraben is an alternative ditch for the Ilmenau, the Ilmenau itself runs parallel to the Lösegraben through the old town of Lüneburg.
Every year in October, the Lüneburg Ilmenau is drained for about a week (among other things, to remove garbage from the riverbed and to check connections and drains), during this time all the water from the Ilmenau is channeled through the Lösegraben.
