The church, built according to plans by the Brunswick architect Carl Theodor Ottmer (Schinkel student), was inaugurated on May 4, 1851, after the previous building was destroyed by a fire in the city in 1834. The altar and pulpit in the neo-Gothic style were created by the sculptor Wilhelm Sagebiel from Brunswick. An art-historical feature of the church is the mural on the altar wall, created in 1902 by court painter Adolf Quensen from Brunswick, which was uncovered and restored in 2002.
