The old castle in Penig (also called the rear castle) was originally a moated castle. Today's complex is a three-storey, elongated Renaissance building with a stair tower in front. Between 1945 and 1990 it was used as an apprentice home by the VEB and also by the Penig paper factory.
In the left wing there is a chapel & in December every year the "Schlossweihnacht" takes place, a small Christmas market on a weekend.
