Independence Square, formerly Pall Mall Square, was renamed on 19 September 1983 to commemorate the birth of the new nation of Saint Christopher and Nevis. It is on the east side of Basseterre and borders Newtown. It was laid out in the shape of a Union Jack and the streets and houses surrounding it date from the mid-eighteenth century. Unfortunately, time and environmental damage have destroyed many of them. Some, like the courthouse and public library, were destroyed by fire and rebuilt.
