The "Pieve" folk church is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the Ascended Holy Mary. The church is the oldest religious building in the entire Montefeltro area. It was built in 881, later destroyed and rebuilt in its present form in the 11th century. According to legend, the church was built over the hermit cell of Saint Leo.

The Pieve di San Leo can be metaphorically depicted as a ship stranded on a rock, a stone ship anchored forever to the rock that supports it and of which it is made up. The building is in fact placed astride a rocky protuberance of the Leontine mass so that, respectively to the east and west, there is space for two rooms below the naves: the crypt or confessional and the so-called Sacellum of San Leone which bears the traces of a sort of apse dug directly into the rock, which is accessed from an external door near the facade.
