The Rio Perenna, a tributary of the Marecchia, springs from the small inhabited center, so called due to the presence of water even in the hottest seasons. The first document that mentions this village dates back to 17 August 962: it is the concession of Soanne to Uldarico Carpegna by Emperor Otto I. It was then a fief of the Oliva, Malatesta and Montefeltro families.
Instead, the legend that gives its name to the small lake located not far from the town, along the road that leads from Maciano to Villagrande, dates back to 1300. The story tells that the shepherd boy Andreuccio died in a stretch of water located here. He fell in love with the beautiful Elisabetta, daughter of Count Evaristo di Carpegna, and with her he sometimes walked along the shores of the lake. Her father, opposed to that dishonorable relationship, had him killed by his soldiers and then thrown into the lake. The princess searched for him and called him in vain for days until she found death in the same waters.
