‘Tashichho Dzong’ is a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of Thimphu, on the west bank of the Wang Chhu. The Dzong was founded at this site in 1631. Over the centuries, there have been several major fires and reconstructions.
In 1962, the country's capital was moved from Punakha to Thimphu. The King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, ordered the expansion and renovation of the ‘Tashichho Dzong’ to house government offices in the building complex.
