According to legend, the Pashupatinath Temple was founded by Jayayakshya (Yaksa) Malla (1428-1482) when he was instructed in a dream to recreate a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple by the Bagmati River in Kathmandu. The temple is the only surviving monument in the Bhaktapur area dating to the 15th century. However, the temple's external appearance is the product of extensive remodelling and reconstruction from the 16th to 18th centuries. Though commonly called Pashupatinath Temple, it is also often identified as the Yakeshvara/Yakshyeshwor Temple, in reference to the founding king.
