The Wandse flows around it to the north and west. There are many small allotment gardens along the shore. About 10 percent of the lake is used as a summer bath. It is a former military bath. It owes its name "Strandbad Ostend" to the soldiers who jokingly compared it to the Belgian North Sea resort. Nutrient inputs result from precipitation, riparian trees, waterfowl, internal nutrient sources and bathing activities. Nevertheless, the water quality is so good that no improvement measures have been necessary so far. The lake is probably fed by springs.
