A simple memorial stone in Bergedorf's palace gardens reveals its purpose only in part: the large erratic boulder bears a small, bronze portrait relief of an elderly man and the inscription Jahn. The honored person is Johann Friedrich Ludwig Christoph Jahn (* August 11, 1778, † October 15, 1852), who is known as "Turnvater Jahn". A look at his biography reveals that he is a pedagogue, publicist and politician who, among other things, founded the German gymnastics movement and the construction of public sports fields. It is less well established in the public consciousness that the promotion of gymnastics not only served the purpose of health, but should also help to prepare young people for the political fight for freedom. The gymnastics exercises were politically colored and therefore controversial. In 1819 Jahn was even arrested. He was later rehabilitated, although his political commitment continued to cause offense. In 1848 Jahn was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly in the Paulskirche. He increasingly distanced himself from the gymnastics movement. After his death, monuments were erected to him in many cities.
