Construction of the Wall began on August 13, 1961. With this over 150 km long border barrier, the government of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) hermetically sealed off East Berlin and the rest of the GDR. Between October 1949 and August 1961, more than 2.7 million people fled the GDR, the majority across the sector borders between East and West Berlin.
